Dark Circles: How to Identify the Cause and What Actually Helps
Dark circles (clinically, periorbital hyperpigmentation and related discoloration) are one of the most common cosmetic concerns — and one of the most mismanaged, because people treat them as a single problem when there are actually several distinct causes. Reviews of the condition classify it by etiology: vascular, pigmentary, structural (shadowing), and mixed, and the effective treatment differs by type.[^review][^syst] Using the wrong approach for your type is why so many eye creams do nothing. This guide helps you identify which you have and covers what the evidence supports for each.

Why the under-eye shows so much
The skin under the eyes is among the thinnest on the body, so whatever sits beneath it — blood vessels, pigment, or shadow-casting hollows — shows through readily.1 That thinness is also why the area is the first to reveal fatigue: sleep-deprived faces are reliably rated as more tired, less healthy, and less attractive, with the under-eye region a major contributor.2 So lifestyle affects appearance here, but it's not the whole story — and for several dark-circle types it's not the main cause at all.
The four causes — and how to tell yours apart
Most people have one dominant type or a mix. A few simple self-checks help you identify yours:
1. Vascular (bluish/purple). Caused by blood vessels visible through thin skin, often worsened by poor sleep, congestion, allergies, or dehydration.
- Tell-tale: bluish or purple tone; tends to improve with rest and worsen when tired or ill.
2. Pigmentary (brown/tan). Excess melanin in the skin itself. More common in medium-to-deeper skin tones, and driven by genetics, sun exposure, inflammation, and eye-rubbing.1
- Self-check (the stretch test): gently stretch the skin sideways. If the brown color stays, it's pigment in the skin; if it fades, it's more vascular.
3. Structural / shadowing. Not discoloration at all — shadows cast by anatomy (a deep tear trough, prominent orbital bone, under-eye volume loss, or eye bags).
- Self-check (the light/tilt test): shine light directly from the front, or tilt your face up toward a light. If the "darkness" largely disappears, it's a shadow, not pigment or vessels.
4. Mixed. A combination of the above — very common, and the reason single-ingredient fixes often disappoint.3
Knowing your type is the whole game, because the treatments below are type-specific.
What actually helps, by type
For vascular circles:
- Sleep, hydration, and managing congestion/allergies genuinely help this type, since it's tied to circulation and fluid.2 If allergies are a factor, treating them can reduce the look.
- Caffeine-containing eye products transiently constrict vessels and reduce puffiness — a modest, temporary effect, not a cure.
- Cold compresses briefly reduce vessel prominence and swelling.
For pigmentary circles:
- Sun protection is foundational — UV worsens pigment, so daily sunscreen around the eyes prevents it deepening.1
- Topical depigmenting agents with evidence in periorbital and related hyperpigmentation include retinoids, vitamin C, azelaic acid, kojic acid, and (under medical guidance) hydroquinone.13 These work slowly, over months.
- Chemical peels (e.g., glycolic, lactic) are used for pigment by clinicians; lasers are mildly-to-moderately helpful for both pigment and vascular types.3
For structural circles:
- Topicals won't fix a shadow. The systematic review is clear that volume-loss shadows respond to soft-tissue fillers or fat grafting, and skin-laxity cases to blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) — procedural, clinician-only options.3
- Non-permanent option: makeup/concealer and good front-lighting genuinely reduce the appearance of shadow-type circles.
For everyone: a retinoid thickens skin and builds collagen over time, which can modestly reduce how much shows through — useful across types, but slow, and the delicate under-eye skin needs a cautious, low-frequency start.1
Realistic expectations
- Dark circles are stubborn and often partly genetic or structural, so "eliminate them" is usually the wrong goal; "improve them" is realistic.
- Match the treatment to the type. Eye creams do little for structural shadows; fillers do nothing for pigment. This mismatch is the single most common reason people waste money here.
- The evidence base is limited, and procedural results vary between people — worth an honest conversation with a dermatologist rather than expectations set by before/after ads.3
- The cheapest wins are lifestyle (sleep, sun protection, allergy control) and, for shadows, concealer and lighting.
The useful reframe: figure out which dark circle you have first, then apply the approach that fits it — and treat any product promising to erase all dark circles for everyone with skepticism.
